How high is the ideal ceiling for a house?
Determining the height of the ceiling of the house from the floor, you can indeed adjust it to your liking. Want a standard, or even a high ceiling, no one forbids. It's just that, before determining the height of the ceiling of the house, you need to pay attention to several factors. Namely, climate, proportion of space/aesthetics, air circulation, and lighting. Here are the basic principles you need to know before determining the ceiling height.
Climate
Take a look, houses in cold climates tend to have low ceilings. In Japan or Europe, for example. Ceiling heights of 2.4 or 2.5 meters are common. The reason is energy saving. The higher the ceiling the higher the heating required.
Meanwhile, in coastal areas or hot climates, high ceilings allow better air circulation. Maybe you also already know that hot air will move up. Therefore, high ceilings allow the air in the room to remain cool. In addition, with high ceilings it is possible for sunlight to penetrate deeper into all parts of the house. Thus the room does not feel damp. So, if you live in a coastal area where the air tends to be hot, the ceiling height should be no less than 280 cm, or between 2.8 – 3.2 m.
Proportions and aesthetics
Architectural design is nothing but talk about the proportion of space. Beautiful design means proportional. Architecture students generally know that to determine the standard ceiling height of a room, the formula applies: (length + width)/2. This means that a room measuring 3x4m will look proportional if the ceiling is about (3+4)/2=3.5m.
Of course this is not a standard mathematical formula because ideal proportions can be processed through good interior arrangement. In essence, the bigger the room, the higher the ceiling. It could also ceiling higher than the width of the room. If it is not matched by a high ceiling, a large room will appear like a stuffy hallway. Therefore, if your living room is large enough, for example 8x5m without any partitions, you can make the ceiling up to 6-7m.
Void or Loft
If you build a house with two floors or more, a high ceiling will create itself. Because, usually there is a void there, which is a space that is left empty on the second floor so that the view can be directly directed to the ceiling of the 2nd floor. You can also create high ceilings by exposing the slope of the roof. That way you can create a beautiful ceiling so that the room will feel more spacious.
Void can also mean an open space without a roof in a part of the house that has only one access, namely from the front. In many settlements, your house is surrounded by walls on either side and back. If you get this condition, the presence of voids is vital, whether on the back or side of the house. Namely so that air circulation and sunlight can enter the house.
