Simple Way to Calculate the Area of a Building Roo
One of the things that is very important and must be mastered by someone who works as an architect, contractor or craftsman operating in the world of building construction is how to calculate the roof area of a building. This is important, because errors in calculating the roof area of a building can have fatal consequences, causing losses to both parties, both as consumers or home owners, as well as architects, contractors or craftsmen. We need to be careful in calculating every part of a building, including calculating the roof area.
As we know, the roof is an important element in the building that we are designing. The roof has an important function and role in protecting us from the heat of the sun, rainwater and other objects that can fall from above and enter the house. Before we discuss further, we should look at several forms of building roofs, namely: gable roofs, shield/limas roofs (like the roofs of traditional Joglo houses), flat roofs (example: sloping/flat shape), special roofs (example: MPR building, Batak traditional house, Toraja Tongkonan house).
The following are several types of roof covering materials commonly used for buildings in Indonesia, namely: Light roofs, such as: straw, palm fiber, zinc, asbestos, polycarbonate. Medium Roofs, such as: Earthen Roof Tiles, Ceramic Roof Tiles, Concrete Roof Tiles, Wooden Roof Tiles, bamboo roof tiles (Tongkonan Toraja traditional house). Heavy Roofs, such as: Cast Concrete Dak. One of the most important things to pay attention to is that the heavier the roof covering material used, the greater the risk of being hit by a heavy object if the roof collapses due to an earthquake.
The following are practical tips for calculating the area of a building's roof for flat, pyramid, gable and shield roofs:
1. How to calculate the area of a flat flat roof.
This method is generally used for houses with cast concrete roofs. The calculation method is as follows:
Formula :
Required roof area = Length x Width
For example, for a house with dimensions of 6m x 10m and a roof overhang of 0.8 m, the calculation of the roof area is as follows:
= (6 + 1.6)m x (10 + 1.6)m
= (7.6m x 11.6m)
= 88.16 m2
2. How to calculate the area of a pyramid/shield/saddle roof.
To calculate the area of a building roof in the shape of a pyramid/shield/saddle, we can use the following formula:
Required roof area = (Length x Width) / Cos (z) where: z is the angle of inclination of the roof
Example of a house with dimensions of 6m x 10m and a roof overhang of 0.8m
The roof slope angle is 30 degrees.
So the calculation of the roof area is as follows:
= ((6 + 1.6)m x (10 + 1.6)m) / (Cos 30)
= (7.6m x 11.6m) / (Cos 30)
= 88.16 m2 / 0.866
= 101.80138 m2
Notes : This formula can still be used to calculate roofs that are a mixture of shields and gables.
