Rain Gutters, Problems and Maintenance
Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages, but leaks can also occur due to improper installation of gutters. Here are a number of things to consider when installing gutters:
1. Gutter slope
According to its function, gutters must be able to drain rainwater well, therefore gutters must have a sufficient slope. Gutters with a length of more than 10 meters should be divided by 2 with a high slope position and then down to the edges. A good gutter slope is 1-2 cm per 3 m of gutter length, meaning for a gutter that is 3 m long, one end should be 1-2 cm lower than the other. Make sure the gutter hanger is installed properly so that the expected slope can be maintained
2. Joint / elbow
Generally, the roof of the house is so long that it requires more than 1 gutter rod, and often the gutter must turn to follow the shape of the angled roof. The joints of these gutters are prone to leaks, so often the joints or elbows are then engineered into holes or funnels of the gutters that are connected to the gutters or vertical pipes. Use a gutter connection according to the size or model of the gutter used, use silicone sealant on the joint to prevent leakage.
3. Gutter funnel
The part of the gutter where there is a hole that directs water into a vertical pipe. Because it is part of the gathering of water flows, the funnel of the gutter is a location that is prone to leaks. Damage to the gutter funnel generally occurs because water does not flow properly and pools in that section, this is often caused by piles of garbage or leaves carried by rainwater. Therefore, you must be diligent in cleaning this section of garbage if you want your roof gutters to last longer.
Finally, gutter planning must also consider aesthetic issues. What kind of gutters match the architectural style you apply, what color, and from what material. All will affect the facade of your house as a whole. Don't let the facade of your house be damaged by improperly designed gutters.
Rain gutters are building elements that are important to consider in building houses, especially in Indonesia, which has high rainfall. Gutter base materials that are currently often used are metal-based gutters (zinc, aluminum, zincalum or galvalum) and plastic or PVC base materials. Each type of gutter has its own advantages and disadvantages. After choosing the type of gutter for you, then the correct installation becomes your next task. The slope of the gutters, joints and gutter funnels must all be considered in order to create a house that is far from leaks.
