Jambi is one of the provinces in Indonesia which is located in the central part of the coast of the island of Sumatra. Jambi is a city that has a Malay culture, this can be seen from the buildings that stand in the city of Jambi, one of which is the Jambi traditional house (kajang leko). The leko kajang house is a traditional house originating from Jambi province. Leko kajang house is one of the stilt houses in Indonesia made of wood. Unlike the traditional Papuan houses, the leko kajang house has a rectangular shape with various sizes. The uniqueness of this stage house lies in the construction of buildings that have the art of carving.
The leko kajang stage house has a curved roof roof construction upward resembling a boat made of woven palm fiber. This ridge is called jerambah or some call it folding kajang. The wall part of the leko kajang house is made of wood with beautiful carved ornaments.
Leko kajang house is divided into 8 rooms
- The first room is Jogan, this room serves as a resting place for family members, besides that Jogan is also used as a place to store water.
- The second room is called the front porch which is used to receive guests, but only male guests are placed in this room.
- The third room is called the inner foyer, this room is used as a bed for boys.
- The fourth room is called a transverse amben, this room is designated as a bridal room.
- The fifth room is called the back porch, this room is a bedroom for unmarried girls.
- The sixth room is called laren, this room is used to receive female guests, or the opposite of the front porch.
- The seventh room is called garang, this room is used to process food and also as a place to store food.
- The eighth room as well as the last room is the kitchen that is used to cook Jambi food specialties.
