Get to know more about the roofing material
The roof is an integral part of the building. As you understand, the roof becomes a functional element that protects family members from the weather outside. However, did you know that there are many types of roofs?
In the world of architecture, there are many types of roofs, ranging from gable, flat, gambrel, pyramid or shield, leaning or skilion, and mansard. Indonesia, which has a tropical climate, also determines the many types of roofs that are reflected in traditional houses from each region.
Architect Pandya Praditya said that the exact application of materials and roof shapes adapted to Indonesia's tropical climate cannot be determined with certainty. "Everything depends on the concept of each architect in dealing with the climate," he said.
For example, the application of a roof garden will give the flexibility that the roof can also be used as a garden with grass as a heat sink. In general, the construction of the roof frame consists of three parts, namely the cover, the curtain, and the truss frame. The cover is placed on the outermost part of the roof truss consisting of horses and gording. The roof frame will be adjusted to the desired roof shape.
According to him, some of the recommended frame materials are wood, mild steel, pure steel. The function of the frame that supports the roof covering must have strong durability. If you use wood material, types of wood such as teak, merbau, and meranti can be an option. However, the main enemies of wood are water, fire and termites. "As much as possible, do not use wood that is not intended for roof trusses because it will be short-lived and dangerous if it is not able to support the load of the roof covering," he explained.
The next alternative is mild steel. This material is classified as having better toughness when compared to wood. Another advantage is its resistance to corrosion, light weight, and has a precise size. However, you need to understand that the disadvantage of mild steel is that it requires a large amount to support the roof covering. As a result, the space under the roof cannot be utilized.
Pure steel material can also be used as a roof truss. “The reason is because pure steel has a stronger structure compared to wood and mild steel. However, the thickness of pure steel puts a considerable load on the foundation and columns.”
ROOF MATERIAL
After determining the material for the frame, then you can freely choose the roofing material. Some types of materials commonly used are tile, bitumen, zincalume, and asbestos. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages, but it can be used in almost any roof model.
Tile is the most widely used roofing material. The raw materials also vary from clay, ceramics, concrete, and metal. The advantage of this material is its relatively small size, so that if there is damage it will facilitate the repair process. Then the various shapes and colors can be adjusted to the architectural style of your residence.
In addition to tiles, asbestos material is also widely used by urban communities. However, this material is no longer recommended because it contains ingredients that are harmful to health. More than 50 countries in the world prohibit the use of asbestos as a roof for buildings. In Indonesia, one type of asbestos commonly used is chrysotile or white asbestos. After the roof is completed, you should start thinking about the ceiling as a roof divider in the interior of the room. The goal is to filter the heat that is absorbed by the roof so that it does not enter the room directly. The space between the ceiling and the roof is known as the space under the roof or attic.
Some homeowners often leave it empty, but some use it as a warehouse and even a bedroom.
According to Pandya, the height of the space under the roof depends on the designer or architect who designed it. In order to remove the heat trapped in the attic, air holes can be made at the top so that air circulation is smoother. "For the shape of the sloping roof, it is relatively easy to make the air holes. However, for a flat roof it is rather difficult because it is prone to leaks when it rains. You just have to adjust it," he explained.
